Moving Feast partners collaborate on map of Victoria’s food social enterprises

Our Moving Feast team recently ran an all day "mapathon" - a hackathon, mapping out food system social enterprises in Melbourne and across Victoria. We created and tested experiences and products designed to engage people in eating seasonally within the social enterprise network as well as reflect on the history and significance of places mapped.

Our amazing mapathon team, facilitated by STREAT and MAKE Studios included participants from Moving Feast partner organisations STREAT, Open Food Network and volunteers from SEEK. It also included talented illustrator Alex Hotchin, designers, food system experts and more.

Dividing into sub-groups we:

  • Road tested a mapped tourist experience in the inner city designed to take the visitor on an e-bike / scooter tour of culturally significant landmarks, embedded with delicious for-purpose food collection/tasting opportunities. Team members Greg and Harish donned their GoPros and took the map for a test drive around Melbourne’s CBD and inner suburbs.

  • Mapped for-purpose food organisations on a map of Victoria, creating proposed food trails and experiences across different regions. This hand-drawing activity brought the region to life.

  • Engaged in deep thinking and planning about food systems of the future, envisioning what a fair and just food system in 2040 might look like.

  • Creating picnic basket and food hamper concepts that incorporate items from different social enterpises, forming collective offerings that could be offered as part of the food experiences mapped.

It was a fantastic day, with lots achieved, we learnt a lot and look forward to iterating the outcomes of the day. Thanks so much to all who participated.
