Glut Watch: Spooky Pineapple Carving

As part of our Open Sauce project, which aims to tackle food waste and create a more regenerative food system, we’re finding ways to make the most of amazing seasonal produce that is in abundance, and in need of a home.

When Fiona Smith from MAKE Studios heard there was an Australia-wide over-supply of pineapples, and that some creative farmers and waste-conscious consumers had found a great way to use the whole fruit, she jumped on Instagram live to run our first glut watch event.

Aside from the joy of eating the pineapple flesh, we learnt how to create a spooky Halloween character and support the growers who could not sell the fruit they started growing well over a year ago (pineapples can take up to 24 months from seed to harvest).

You need:

- One pineapple;

- A sharp knife;

- A chopping board;

- A bowl to put the pineapple fruit in;

- A table spoon;

- A tea light to show off your carving skills when the sun goes down.

Watch the workshop here on MAKE’s Instagram live recording.

This workshop was an Open Sauce event, aiming to show you how to reduce waste, and find better ways to support farmers who have an over-supply, or glut, of produce.

This project is supported by the Victorian Government’s Recycling Victoria Innovation Fund as part of the Circular Economy Business Innovation Centre (CEBIC).
